In March, LMSA celebrated its 8th Annual Conference in conjunction with the Southeast Region’s 5th Regional Conference in the city of Miami, Florida. This event was a three-day long conference that incorporated workshops for all levels – High school, Undergraduate, Graduate, and Post-Graduate (Resident Physician) and a health fair at a local church. There were over 300 participants at the conference and recruitment tabling was at an all-time high. Recruiters for medical schools and residency programs were available to answer student questions on their future aspirations.

This Conference also featured the 1st Annual Mentor of the Year Award which was given posthumously to Philip DeChavez, MD MPH who was the organization’s National Executive Director for multiple years until his untimely passing in 2012. This award will be given in future years in his name to honor his dedication to mentoring students across the nation. The new Executive Director is Ruben Font, Jr MD who is an Emergency Medicine physician in Georgia and was extremely active in LMSA as a medical student. He was National Coordinator in 2008. The 2nd Annual Scholarship for US Medical Students was also announced at the National Conference. There were four awardees this year and a total of $1,500 was raised this year for scholarships.
