The University of Cincinnati LMSA Chapter is very excited at the past two year’s success with designing and implementing medical Spanish programs at our institution. We began with a Spanish-speaking standardized patient encounter program that has since been incorporated into a for-credit, three-year longitudinal medical Spanish elective.

The Mitchell Family Health Resource Fair

According to Principal Kevin Karr, 80% of the students at Mitchell Elementary School live below the poverty line. Additionally, 40% of the student body comes from Spanish-speaking households. The Mitchell Family Health Resource Fair was a project designed specifically to reach out to these families and connect them with important health-related resources. The event, which took place on February 18th, was a tremendous success and set the stage for similar events to be held in years to come.
The Mitchell Family Health Resource Fair was a collaboration between the Latin American Native American Medical Association (LANAMA) at the University of Michigan Medical School, the Michigan Regional Alliance For Health Schools (RAHS), and of course, Mitchell Elementary School. The project was originally born out of a desire to provide the students in LANAMA’s Medical Spanish course with an opportunity for service-based learning. After months of hard work in the classroom, our students were eager to put their new language skills to use in the community. Partnering with Mitchell Elementary School provided a perfect hands-on opportunity for our students, while at the same time helping the administration at Mitchell Elementary to connect with families that have been notoriously hard to reach.
The first step in preparing for the health resource fair was a basic needs assessment. LANAMA volunteers attended the school’s parent-teacher conferences and administered short surveys in both English and Spanish to the parents in attendance. The surveys revealed the health-related topics of greatest interest to parents included nutrition, exercise, stress, bullying, and internet safety. Teams of students from the Medical Spanish course then got to work researching these topics and preparing presentations, posters, and flyers in both English and Spanish.
In the weeks leading up to the event, we initiated a multipronged publicity campaign which involved take-home flyers for the students, announcements in the school newsletter, and even a phone-a-thon in which we called all 250 families associated with the school. With the funds generously awarded by LMSA, we were even able to purchase health-related raffle prizes to further incentivize students and families to attend the event.
On the night of the event, the multipurpose room at Mitchell Elementary school was full of energy and excited conversation. Children participated in health-related activities and games while their parents were able to visit the different stations where medical students presented on various health related topics. The feedback we received was very positive and we anticipate that the partnership between LANAMA and Mitchell Elementary School will continue to growth and strengthen in years to come.
