Latino Healthcare Day

Occurring on Sunday March 25, 2012 – The LMSA Midwest Sunday Service Event will be a health education day with the goals of promoting health awareness and recruiting into the health professions among Chicago high school students. This will be done by having students rotate through various interactive sessions on health issues that disproportionately affect the Latino Community (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and teenage pregnancy). Your help is needed to ensure this dynamic day of lectures, wet pathology specimens, and clinical skills instruction is fun and inspirational! LMSA Volunteer Positions:

Group chaperones: 2-4 per group = 20-40 volunteers
Class instructors: 2-3 per class = 8-12 volunteers *Note: PPT will be provided
Need 28-52 volunteers

Tentative Schedule for Sunday, March 25th

07:30 – 08:00 Registration and light refreshments
08:00 – 08:10 Welcome
08:10 – 08:40 Opening Keynote: Introduce ‘health disparity’, describe the overrepresentation of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and teenage pregnancy/STI’s within the Latino community, define ‘underrepresented minority’ within healthcare, and the keynote speaker will tell their personal path through medicine.
09:00 – 09:50 Session I
10:00 – 10:50 Session II
11:00 – 11:50 Session III
12:00 – 12:50 Lunch
13:00 – 13:50 Session IV
14:00 – 14:50 Session V
15:00 – 15:30 Review/Closing Remarks


HYPERTENSION (50 minutes):

15 min – Cardiac anatomy/physiology and hypertension
10 min – Pathology specimens of normal and hypertrophic heart to observe effects of unmanaged hypertension
5 min – Instruct how to take blood pressure
15 min – Practice blood pressure taking on peers
5 min – Review ab/normal blood pressure values
DIABETES (50 minutes):
15 min – Anatomy/physiology of pancreas and blood sugar
10 min – Pathology specimens of pancreas
10 min – Diagnosis of diabetes and instruct how to take blood glucose
10 min – Practice taking neighbor’s blood glucose
5 min – Review ab/normal blood glucose values
OBESITY (50 minutes):
Discuss new 5-4-3-2-1-Go Campaign
5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
4 servings of water a day
3 servings of low-fat dairy a day
2 or less hours of screen time a day
1 or more hours of physical activity a day
ChooseMyPlate guidelines and BMI
Discuss STI’s and contraception options.
ZUMBA (group 1) and YOGA (group 2) each 40-45 minutes
