DOCTORS HOSPITAL AT RENAISSANCE HOSTS 14TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY SEMINAR
The Dr. Hector Garcia Leadership & Advocacy Seminar held for the first time in the Rio Grande Valley

Edinburg, TX—Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is proud to announce that will host the 14th Annual Dr. Hector Garcia Leadership & Advocacy Seminar (GLAS), which will be led by the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA). Held at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance November 21st through November 24th, 2013, GLAS was designed to cultivate and develop the leadership, organizational, and advocacy skills of recognized Latino medical student leaders from across the United States.

The Dr. Hector Garcia Leadership & Advocacy Seminar (GLAS) formally addressed the lack of leadership diversity in the health care workforce by investing early in the career of Latino physician leaders. GLAS consists of keynote speakers, leadership presentations, role-playing activities, skills building classes, advocacy workshops, and networking opportunities led by industry experts. Topics of discussion include Leadership Framework, Conflict and Negotiation Skills, Organized Medical Leadership, Medicare/ Medicaid Basics, Legislative Advocacy Skills, Media Advocacy Skills, and Leadership Role Models.

Dr. Hector Garcia, a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1940, was a Mexican-American physician who exemplified the spirit of GLAS, which is named in his honor. Created and founded by Dr. Fausto Meza in 1999 as a leadership and advocacy skills training workshop, GLAS is held annually for Hispanic medical student leaders around the nation. Dr. Meza, a partner at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, is the former national coordinator of the U.S. Latino Medical Students Association. The Dr. Hector Garcia Leadership & Advocacy Seminar (GLAS) strives to develop effective Latino physician leaders so that they may become effective patient advocates and physician leaders in government, the private sector, and the community.
